The sea/ocean symbolises the primal waters out of which our world/cosmos/universe is created, according to numerous Creation stories.

An underwater civilisation built by aquatic human-like creatures is in the H.G. Wells story “In The Abyss”. Wells’ contemporary sci-fi author JULES VERNE penned the famous underwater story “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” that includes the discovery of the island continent of Atlantis, which according to the Greek philosopher Plato sinks into the ocean after its’ inhabitants displease the Gods.
